Metabolism

What does metabolism even mean?

Metabolism is the sum of every process in your body: digestion, immunity, detoxification, sex drive, repair, hormones and so on. Your metabolism runs on the 3 macronutrients: carbs, protein and fats. These macros are stored in the body and used for energy, structure, and rebuilding.
The higher your metabolic rate is the more energy from food you will require. A strong healthy metabolism will build muscle quicker, lose fat more easily and provide better energy and overall health!

Why do we want a high metabolism?

If your metabolism slows down, so will your digestion (more constipation and bloating), your ability to produce sex hormones (low sex drive and abnormal menstrual cycles), your immune system, and your ability to build muscle.

How do you know if your metabolism is running high or low

Here are a few key signs of a high metabolism:

  • Basal temperature of approximately 97.8 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Heart rate of 75-90 bpm
  • Strong libido
  • Healthy menstrual cycles
  • 1-3 bowel movements per day
  • Deep quality sleep every night for 7-9 hours
  • Stable energy throughout the day
  • Able to adapt and tolerate stress
  • Strong immune system
  • Stable weight without needing to over-exercise or diet

What can you do to start supporting your metabolism?

Start to incorporate these 5 tips:

  • Have breakfast within the first 30-60 minutes of waking up (proteins and starches)
  • Include fruits as a carbohydrate source in your meals (especially pre and post-workout)
  • Ensure you consume protein every 3-4 hours
  • Focus more on strength training and building muscle versus ample of cardio or endurance training
  • Prioritize your sleep, manage stress levels and promote recovery

There are many more strategies you can use to help increase your metabolic rate!
